The Agricultural Market Intelligence Centre has started functioning in Kerala Agricultural University under the National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP).

Dr. P.K. Rajeevan, Associate Dean, College of Horticulture, welcomed the gathering. The Centre was formally inaugurated on October 12th 2009 by Sri. Rajaji Mathew Thomas, MLA and Member, Executive Committee, KAU. In the inaugural address, he stressed the need for building up market awareness among farmers in Kerala who are cultivating more market-oriented cash crops. Dr. N. Raveendran, National Consultant, NAIP elaborated on the need and importance of bringing an agricultural market intelligence centre. He opined that even though the agricultural production has increased to a considerable extent after the 1960s, a corresponding increase in the standard of living of farmers is not being seen. In that context, efficient functioning of an agricultural market intelligence centre could play a pivotal role by providing timely information about the market conditions and realization of remunerative prices.

Dr. D. Alexander, Director of Research, Kerala Agricultural University presided over the function. In his presidential address, Dr. D. Alexander emphasized the need for marketing information for taking production and marketing decisions. He reiterated that the information on demand patterns, price behaviour, better farming practices, handling, packaging etc. has to be brought to the attention of all market functionaries to reap the full benefits of production advantages. On felicitating the occasion, Dr. V. Radhakrishnan, former Professor & Head, Department of Agricultural Economics blessed the occasion and told that technical and institutional support is a major factor in bringing out initiatives like this for the betterment of the farming community in Kerala.

Sri. Rajaji Mathew Thomas, MLA released the folder explaining the functioning and objectives of the Agricultural Market Intelligence Centre by handing over a copy to Dr. K. Mukundan, former Professor & Head, Department of Agricultural Economics.

Dr. N. Raveendran released the pepper price forecasts for the months of October, November and December. Dr. E. K. Thomas, Professor and Head, Department of Agricultural Economics received the first copy of forecast. Though a network of 11 prominent State Agricultural Universities in India with TNAU as the Lead Centre, the KAU Market Intelligence Centre is the first Centre after the Lead Centre to come out with a price forecast.
